Today’s zero waste kitchen: Orange (all of it)

Today was a busy one in the zero waste kitchen. I think the thing I love the most about zero waste cooking is you start out with one thing and end up with a whole bunch of other (non related) things.

Today was case in point.

I had an orange. Gifted to me by my mother who frequents the reduced produce shelf. I suppose the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

I was making cranberry jelly — yes I understand this already seems unrelated — so I decided I would substitute some of the water with freshly squeezed orange juice. But for all you bakers out there you know the real orange flavour is in the zest. So first I zested the orange to save it for some baking later. Then I semi squeezed the orange to get the juice I needed for the jelly. The orange was a juicy one so I removed the remaining pulp and consumed for breakfast. Lastly, the peels went into a mason jar with some vinegar to be used in my next batch of homemade surface cleaner.

Voila. I love it.

1 Orange = zest, jelly, breakfast, cleaner 🤸

Oh and the jelly — the most beautiful thing you’ve ever seen 😄
